The RUNdown

The Leicestershire Road Running League season continued with the Stilton 7. Elsewhere, Barrow Runners competed in races as far afield as Paris, Leuven and (the other) Boston.

The 'Run' down - 14th April 2025

The Leicestershire Road Running League season rolled on to Melton Mowbray and there was a strong turnout from the club for the Stilton 7. 17 Barrow Runners completed the course with our (joint) 'Runner of the Month' Jack Peasgood leading the way with an impressive chip time of 40.01 and a 12th place overall finish. Kirsty Hillier continued her excellent showing in the league races, finishing second place in her age category and 6th woman overall. Special mention to Alex Toll for running 9 miles to the start line and then completing the race itself with a 'diamond' standard time - incredible!

There was also an international flavour to some of our runners' achievements this week. Our Belgian superstar Mats Vermeeren returned 'home' to the land of rich chocolate and strong beer for a stunning time in the European Running Championships half marathon in Leuven, even managing to get on Belgian telly! A short Eurostar trip away, Sam Minion ran the Paris marathon in an amazing personal best of 3:05:44 and significantly raised the profile of Derby County in the process. Quite the achievement!

Closer to home, one of the new additions to our coaching team, Michael Cheverton, completed the Leicester Big 10k in a rapid 34:04, securing 3rd place overall - we're running out of superlatives to describe this guy. Another incredibly consistent runner for the club, Dawn Storer, completed 'the other' (slightly less hilly) Boston marathon at the weekend - no mean feat. One of our newer members, Lee Godrich, completed the South Downs Way 50 - an epic 50 mile challenge along the beautiful South Downs Way National Trail, beginning in Worthing and finishing in Eastbourne. And, never to be outdone in the endurance stakes, Jon Richardson ran The Peak District Birthday Bash: a 35km race which included a whopping 4725 feet of elevation.

There was also the usual plethora of parkruns (well, 38) and a notable achievement for the Club Captain, Mark Sadler, running his 350th parkrun. At the other end of the age scale (sorry, Mark), Tilly Bowles ran her 100th junior parkrun. Fiona Mee tackled what is reckoned to be the most difficult parkrun in the UK, across the north beach at Great Yarmouth - and was the second woman across the line. There was, in total, an impressive 12 age group placings for the club, a number of which were at Watermead for various committee members!

Well done, all!
