The RUNdown - 3rd November 2026
Turn, Turn, Turn - To everything there is a season
After summer, follows... winter. Just a week on from the dramatic climax of the club summer championship, Sunday saw the start of our winter championship with the very popular Shepshed 7.
Runners who took part in the infamous Pint and Pork Scratchings race experienced a troubling sense of deja vu when race guidelines suggested road shoes might be suitable, 'suffice' even - but clearly the right choice was made as it was a beautiful morning and the club performed brilliantly with five of our runners bringing home a trophy!
Michael Cheverton went one better than last year and finished first overall! Just as impressive was the evergreen 58 year old Tim Hartley, finishing just behind Michael in second place overall - what an inspiration he continues to be! Rachel Bentley, Liv Bent and Bridie Darcy also picked up a trophy as the 1st ladies team and Bridie also found time to lead the warm-up. Rachel was also expecting a 'double whammy' of her own in the form of an additional trophy as 4th lady, but was 'misled by false advertising' in her own words. She's still a little grumpy about it, but a video of Highland cows seems to have calmed her down a bit.
Saturday's parkruns coincided with Halloween and there was another cause for celebration as Rebecca Chandler reached her 100th milestone at Beacon Hill parkrun. There was a great turnout to support Rebecca with a number of our runners donning Halloween appropriate fancy dress - Amber Lester among them, and she still finished as first lady! Parkrun royalty, Nick Castle and Rachel Vatter, continued their tourism, expanding their empire as far as Pomphrey Hill - and they again finished first in their genders. It's a good job we're only giving them emoji medals for their parkrun placings otherwise they'd be in need of a house extension by now.
Saturday seemed to be a good day for parkrun PBs with newcomers Henry Carr and Joni Ashford picking up personal bests at Abbey Park. One of this year's superstars, Liam Harvey, also improved his PB there - he says it was 'unexpected', but he's achieved so many PBs this year, it should come as no surprise. Grace Dunkley continued her excellent form at Watermead, picking up another PB and was the third female home. Your veteran Rundown reporter also shaved a bit off his 5K PB at Marine Parade and probably should be too modest to mention it.
Well done, all!
